Jurat vs acknowledgment
-
The words
A jurat is the "Sworn to before me this ___ day" clause on a sworn written statement (an affidavit). An acknowledgment certifies a signature.
The actual law, so it can’t scare you later.
-
Actually means
Jurat = they SWORE the contents are true. Acknowledgment = they confirmed the SIGNATURE is theirs. One is about truth; the other is about identity.
Plain English. No legalese survives this step.
-
Live example
An affidavit of residence: the parent swears the contents are true and you complete the jurat. A deed: the signer only confirms the signature, with no oath about truth.
A scene you can picture.
-
Killer question
The single most tested distinction. Hook: jurat = swore (truth), acknowledgment = signed (identity). Expect it, often dressed as a scenario.
Exactly how the exam asks it.
